PORTLAND, Ore. – Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) today announced it has donated a snow plow to the City of Portland in a ceremony that took place this morning at DTNA headquarters, 4747 N. Channel Ave. Formerly known as Freightliner LLC, DTNA was founded as Freightliner Corporation in 1942, and opened its first full-scale manufacturing facility in Portland in 1947.
Portland Mayor Tom Potter and Mayor-Elect Sam Adams received the keys to the fully equipped, severe-duty vehicle. The new plow, whose Western Star chassis was manufactured at the Portland Truck Manufacturing Plant, will become part of Portland’s fleet of vehicles responsible for cleaning and maintaining the city’s streets in the winter.
“We appreciate DTNA’s generosity and the neighborly spirit behind this donation, and we will certainly put the plow to good use,” said Mayor Potter.
The plow is a Western Star 4900 SA equipped with a 10-foot Wausau straight curl-top composite snowplow blade. The all-wheel drive (6x6) Western Star is outfitted with a Portland-based Columbia Body Manufacturing dump body, 12.8 liter Detroit Diesel MBE 4000 engine and Allison 4500 RDS 6-speed transmission, providing the durability and power needed for tough winter jobs.
DTNA is a proud supporter of the local Portland community, and also serves as a 2008 sponsor of the Washington Park Summer Festival, the Portland State Engineering SAE Mini-Baja and Formula One Teams, and the St. Joseph Worker Intern program. DTNA’s 2008 charitable contributions in the Portland area will include participation in the Columbia-Willamette United Way, and donation of food and funding to the Oregon Food Bank. DTNA also supports the Oregon Humane Society and Junior Achievement.
“Our business is heavy trucks, so we are pleased to contribute a Western Star equipped with a snow plow to the city of Portland,” said Chris Patterson, president and CEO of Daimler Trucks North America. “I do have to say that we have an understanding that part of the city’s responsibility includes a commitment to keep the Swan Island hill free of snow this winter!”
