Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) Delivering More than 2,000 Gasoline-powered Walk-in Vans to Package Giant UPS

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) continues to demonstrate its broad products coverage and market acceptance with the successful launch of its gasoline-powered chassis.

Georgia-based UPS (NYSE: UPS) has ordered more than 2,000 FCCC gasoline-powered walk-in van (WIV) chassis for its fleet. Following last year’s successful deployment of a preproduction run of 350 FCCC gas-powered MT-45G and MT-55G chassis, UPS ordered 2,121 additional units in February and March 2011. The WIV chassis are expected to be delivered to UPS during the summer months.

Because the gasoline-powered MT-45G and MT-55G share the same chassis platform as their diesel-powered counterparts, there is none of the compromise in durability associated with less robust chassis typically used with gasoline engines. The full-section steel straight-rail frame is the strongest in the industry, capable of carrying up to 13,000 pounds of cargo and built to reduce flex and bowing while meeting the heavy payload demands of the pickup and delivery business.

The common platform – everything from frame design to axles and suspension – also means increased uptime, based on the easy availability of existing parts during maintenance.

Built to withstand 14,000 to 23,000 lbs. GVW, the chassis utilize the General Motors 6.0-liter V8 engine and either the Allison® 1000 or 2000 series transmission, balancing 308 hp with smooth, precise shifting and increased fuel efficiency.

“Our design has been very well-received by our customers, and this order from UPS serves as evidence,” said Kris Hus, FCCC commercial product manager. “Their confidence in FCCC’s gasoline-powered chassis demonstrates that this product comes with all the reliability, durability, serviceability and performance that our customers have come to expect.”

UPS also operates FCCC MT-45 and MT-55 diesel chassis, hybrid-electric chassis and compressed natural gas (CNG) chassis.

Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation manufactures premium chassis for the motorhome, delivery walk-in van, and school bus and shuttle bus markets. Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation is a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America LLC, a Daimler company.
