PHOENIX, ARIZONA...Freightliner Trucks today unveiled the next evolution of medium-duty and vocational trucks in North America, the Business Class® M2. A completely new line of Class 5-8 trucks, the Business Class M2 is intended to provide commercial truck operators with unprecedented advantages in productivity and operational efficiency. The Business Class M2 will succeed Freightliner's highly successful Business Class product line, introduced in 1991.

The Freightliner Business Class has defined the state-of-the-art in North American Class 5-8 trucks for over a decade, said Rainer Schmueckle, President and CEO of Freightliner LLC. With the new Business Class M2, Freightliner is taking medium-duty and vocational truck design another step forward to help deliver maximum returns for our customers.

The Business Class M2 will serve a multitude of industries and commercial truck applications, local and regional distribution, food & beverage delivery, fire and emergency services, fuel oil delivery, utilities, government services, towing & recovery, agriculture and many others.

Over the next two years, Freightliner Trucks will introduce numerous Business Class M2 configurations, which can be customized to a broad range of commercial truck applications.

Freightliner is rolling out the Business Class M2 in a 106-inch BBC (bumper-to-back-of-cab) configuration. Extended cabs and crew cabs will be available in late 2002. A 100-inch BBC model and a 112-inch BBC model will be available in 2003.

The new Class 5-8 vehicle was unveiled at a Freightliner Trucks dealer meeting and press event here.

Designed for Business

Although the Business Class M2 is a completely new vehicle, Freightliner decided to continue the "Business Class" name because the new truck, like its predecessor, is designed to address the demands of daily business.

Freightliner designed the Business Class M2 truck as an advanced business tool to help customers operate with maximum safety, productivity and efficiency, said Mark Lampert, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Freightliner Trucks.

Key advantages of the new Business Class M2 include:

Superior visibility -- A low cab, sloped hood and huge, 2500-square-inch windshield allow for a panoramic view of the truck's surroundings, contributing to safer operation.

Superb maneuverability -- An enhanced up-to-55-degree wheel cut delivers a tight turning radius, making the truck extremely nimble in crowded streets and narrow alleys.

Driver-friendly cab -- A roomier cab and a completely redesigned heating/cooling/ventilation system keeps drivers comfortable and productive. Wider, taller doors provide easy cab ingress and egress.

Outstanding reliability -- Every component and system is optimized for maximum performance and uptime. An advanced, multiplexed wiring system eliminates large wiring bundles, contributing to greater reliability and simple diagnostics. A new air manifold unit reduces the number of air lines in the cab, delivering greater reliability and performance.

Rugged construction -- An aluminum cab is lightweight and corrosion-resistant and is designed to meet stringent crashworthiness standards. A sturdy door construction is intended to withstand punishing daily use. Strong frame rails stand up to demanding operations.

Standard Mercedes-Benz engine -- Freightliner's proprietary MBE900 engine -- in 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder versions -- delivers outstanding durability, drivability and low cost of operation. Overall, the Business Class M2 offers a broad range of engine and transmission choices.

Distinctive styling -- Clean lines and a sleek, strong look create a modern yet traditional appearance. The truck's premium appearance will help create a positive image for customers' businesses.

Easily serviceable -- Easy access to major components, color-coded wires, simplified electronics and straightforward diagnostics enable simple, quick servicing of the truck.

Highly customizable -- The Business Class M2 will be available in a range of configurations with a myriad of component and feature choices. The truck also features a clean back-of-cab, making it easy for bodybuilders to install equipment.

Comprehensive customer support -- The Business Class M2 will be supported by the vast Freightliner Trucks dealer network, many with 24 x 7 service locations for customer convenience.

From frame rails to fit & finish, the Business Class M2 incorporates all we have learned about helping to make our customers more successful in their businesses, Lampert said. In the Business Class M2, Freightliner has created an advanced product designed to exceed customer expectations and establish a new benchmark for medium-duty and vocational truck design.

Freightliner will begin taking orders for 106-inch BBC Business Class M2 models immediately. Limited production will begin in June 2002.

The Business Class M2 will be built at Freightliner's Mt. Holly, N.C., truck manufacturing plant, the site of current Business Class production.
