Freightliner Trucks Presents Anvil’s Fourth Annual Get SMART Gala
Portland, Ore. – Freightliner Trucks is this year’s presenting sponsor of Anvil’s Fourth Annual Get SMART Gala, taking place at Holocene, located at 1001 SE Morrison, on September 21, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. The gala is intended to raise community awareness and recruit volunteers for the SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) reading program. Freightliner’s financial partner, DaimlerChrysler Truck Financial, is sponsoring the silent auction at the event.
“We are proud to be the official sponsor of the SMART Gala for the second year in a row,” said Mark Lampert, senior vice president of sales, Freightliner LLC. “Last year it proved to be a great opportunity for recruiting new volunteers and raising funds to support the program, while also sending the message to our community on how important the SMART reading program is for local children.”
As the headlining sponsor, Freightliner Trucks will have a heavy-duty Coronado® truck model on display, as well as offer truck rides to the general public. The gala will be hosted by Les Sarnoff from local radio station KINK-FM and will feature a silent and live auction and raffle prizes. Local company Anvil Media, Inc., a search engine marketing agency specializing in search engine optimization and pay-per-click management services, is the founder and organizer of the annual Get SMART Gala Event.
“I originally got involved with SMART because I believe that positively influencing a young child’s life by teaching him or her to read is a necessity for a successful future,” said Kent Lewis, president of Anvil Media. “With SMART’s help, today’s children can be tomorrow’s presidents, authors, astronauts or teachers.”
DaimlerChrysler Truck Financial, sponsor of this year’s SMART Gala silent auction, also supports the SMART reading program through employee volunteers out of their local Montgomery Park office. “We are proud to encourage local children’s continued education, build their self-esteem and put them on a path to a brighter future,” said Anthony Bandmann, director of sales, marketing and remarketing, DaimlerChrysler Truck Financial. “Our employees get just as much of a sense of accomplishment out of their reading time as the kids do.”
The SMART Gala is expected to draw hundreds of local business professionals, raise awareness of the literacy program and generate funds that will allow SMART to help an even greater number of struggling readers throughout the Portland metropolitan area.
“As a company that employs thousands of employees right here in the Portland metropolitan area, we highly encourage our local workforce to participate in the SMART program, giving back to the community in which we all live and work,” Lampert added. “We want to inspire, motivate and encourage SMART children in the hopes that future generations of Portlanders will be successful and highly-literate.”
“We’re very excited about the SMART Gala and believe it will be another record-breaking year to help SMART serve 12,000 students throughout Oregon,” said Lisa Wiebe, chief executive officer for SMART. “SMART is thankful for partners like Anvil Media, Freightliner Trucks and DaimlerChrysler Truck Financial that help SMART reach out to supporters and potential volunteers at this fun event.”

SMART delivers the two things K-3 students need most to learn to read: adult attention and books. Volunteers read with two children for one hour a week in public elementary schools, and the children receive two books each month to keep and read with their families. It’s a simple approach that makes a world of difference. To learn more about SMART, visit www.getsmartoregon.org or call 888-598-4633.
