PORTLAND, OREGON…Freightliner Trucks today introduced an exciting new look for the Century Class S/T heavy-duty truck. The design changes include a newly-styled hood, grille and bumper, which give the truck a bold, new appearance. Along with the styling changes, the newly enhanced Century Class S/T incorporates additional performance benefits like increased cooling capacity and better headlamp light distribution. The changes are designed to further the Century Class S/T’s reputation as a leader in North American Class 8 truck technology.

The Century Class S/T (Safety/Technology) truck is the most advanced heavy-duty vehicle in the Freightliner Trucks product line. Available in a 120-inch BBC long conventional configuration, the truck is loaded with advanced systems that increase driver comfort, enhance safety and maximize productivity.

“Freightliner Trucks is very proud to unveil the new-look Century Class S/T along with the additional performance features,” said Mark Lampert, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Freightliner Trucks. “The enhancements made to the new Century Class S/T emphasize style and performance and serve to further extend the vehicle’s reputation as a technology and productivity leader in the heavy-duty trucking industry.”

According to Lampert, the Century Class S/T’s new chrome grille provides a fresh, new front to the Century Class S/T, enhancing the appearance of the truck. The bolder frontal view was achieved without altering the exceptional aerodynamics or visibility of the original Century Class S/T. Additionally, the new grille allows for more cooling capacity to accommodate the new, hotter-running 2004 engines. The new grille and lower panel increase the frontal opening to 55% of the total surface area. By opening up the grille, airflow has been improved allowing for excellent cooling performance.

The Century S/T’s three-piece bumper has been redesigned and restyled as well. The outside pieces are still manufactured with damage-tolerant plastic, but the center section now comes with an optional chrome package. This, along with the chrome grille, sets off the front of the truck very nicely. Optional inset road lamps and amber accent lights are also available.

Freightliner has improved the headlamp design by replacing the 7-inch round, sealed beams with a new composite headlamp, providing better light distribution on the road and increasing nighttime visibility. The readily-available, industry-standard bulbs are protected by a strong, poly-carbonate lens.

Additionally, the inner fender splash shields are now mounted on the hood itself, rather than the chassis. These splash shields provide excellent protection of the engine compartment from splash, spray and road debris. Fender star cracking from rocks is also precluded by the inner fender shields. In addition, when the hood is tilted, the inner fenders move out of the way allowing for easy access to the engine. This makes routine servicing of the engine easier and reduces maintenance time.

Another update to the new Century Class S/T is the redesigned sun visor. This aerodynamic exterior sun visor decreases drag for improved fuel economy. The one-piece design reduces replacement and repair time, adding to the efficiency of the new Century S/T. The one-piece visor also weighs several pounds less than the original three-piece design, which is still available as an option for the enhanced S/T. The sun visor is available for SleeperCab configurations only, beginning fourth quarter 2003.

“The latest Century Class S/T retains all of the exceptional safety and performance features that have made the truck the leader in heavy-duty truck technology,” Lampert states. “The redesign of the S/T only increases its technological leadership, while adding a further touch of style to what was already a great-looking truck.”

First introduced in 1995, the Century Class has been one of the most popular trucks among North America’s truck fleets. In 1999, Freightliner Trucks introduced the Century Class S/T (Safety/Technology) vehicle, a major product upgrade, adding numerous standard safety and technology features like a driver’s side airbag, Eaton-Fuller AutoShift 10-speed transmission, EzyRider Seat and enhanced noise reduction and ride enhancement packages. Today, the Century Class S/T incorporates numerous standard and optional safety, information technology, performance, serviceability and driver comfort benefits. In addition, the Century Class S/T features a lightweight aluminum cab and numerous weight-saving features for additional vehicle productivity.

The Century Class S/T is available with a choice of engines from Mercedes-Benz, Detroit Diesel and Caterpillar and in seven separate sleeper configurations.

The Century Class S/T is backed by a comprehensive warranty—three years and 350,000 miles. With the Freightliner Customer Assistance Center, a 24-hour-a-day, in-house call center, the network of North American dealers and Freightliner’s sophisticated software support systems, owners and drivers of the Century Class S/T can rely on Freightliner’s commitment to unparalleled customer support.
