Glenda Farnes Logs More Than 1 Million Miles in Detroit Diesel Series 60-Equipped Western Star

Long time owner/operator credits reliable engine and durable truck for longevity on the road

REDFORD, Mich. – Sept. 02, 2009 – Glenda Farnes is no stranger to coast-to-coast hauling. Growing up in the front seat of a big rig with her father, Farnes – a resident of Adairsville, Ga. – has spent the last 26 years as an owner/operator, driving trucks across the country with her husband, Sherman, who recently retired from the industry.

“I’ve been riding in a truck for as long as I can remember. My parents and grandparents were all in the industry,” said Farnes. “When you’re out on the road, you’re the boss, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”

Western Star: Built to Last

In 2001, Farnes choose to test drive a Western Star® 4900 SA, and right away she knew she had a winner.

“As soon as I got in the Western Star, it felt much more stable than other models I’ve driven. I knew it would be a long-lasting, good truck,” said Farnes.

In addition to appreciating the truck’s durability, Farnes notes that the 4900 SA is also easy to operate. The set-back front axle makes the truck simple to maneuver, and the sloped hood not only increases visibility, but gives the truck a rounded, stylish look. Her 4900 SA also features a 13-speed Eaton transmission, Hendrickson suspension and 240-inch wheel base, which helps to navigate tight corners.

And after more than a quarter of a century in the business, comfort is more important than ever to Farnes. Now having to perform kidney dialysis while on the road, Farnes depends on her Western Star truck’s roominess and quiet interior.

“I am only able to go home to Georgia twice a month, so I have no choice but to maintain my medical needs on the road. It makes it much easier to live in a truck where I can comfortably rest,” said Farnes.

The 76-inch Starlite® sleeper features a 42-inch bunk, which can comfortably fit Farnes and her husband. The interior of the truck features tuck-and-rolled leather seats that are easy to clean, long lasting and resistant to most odors. Farnes also notes that the dashboard is easily accessible and the gauges are very visible.

“There is no doubt that Western Star trucks are not only built to last, but the most comfortable truck I’ve ever driven,” said Farnes. “They will do any job you need them to do. I will never choose anything but a Western Star.”

Under the Hood

A long time Detroit Diesel customer, Farnes equipped her 4900 SA with a Detroit Diesel® Series 60® engine. Recently logging more than 1.6 million miles, Farnes credits her reliable engine for her longevity on the road.

“I was first introduced to Detroit Diesel by my father, and still feel that they are the best engines on the road. As long as they’re making engines, we’ll be buying,” said Farnes.

Although its long-lasting durability is a key factor in the success of the Series 60, Farnes also credits regular maintenance to the extended life of her engine, as well as her trucks. At 890,000 miles, the engine received a minor overhaul, which included new valve guides. And, in addition to the engine, the 4900 SA received a new front end and new shock absorbers at 1.3 million miles.

“I was taught from very early on that engine maintenance is one of the most important factors in keeping a truck on the road for many years,” said Farnes. “I can’t tell you how many people forget that. I am very diligent about regular check ups and service intervals.”

With more than 800 locations in North America, Detroit Diesel’s trained and qualified technicians are never far away. Its sophisticated parts and service network keeps locations stocked with genuine Detroit Diesel parts, Genuine Maintenance products, as well as reliabilt® remanufactured parts.

Farnes continued: “I couldn’t be happier with my Western Star and Series 60 engine. I am confident that I’ll have many more years on the road with their unmatched durability and performance.”
