New 2004 Engine Offerings from Western Star Trucks

Complete Line of Powerful Engines from Mercedes-Benz, Detroit Diesel and Caterpillar Now Available

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY… Western Star Trucks announces a complete line-up of 2004 engines from Mercedes-Benz, Detroit Diesel and Caterpillar. Now available for a wide variety of Western Star models and applications, the engines provide superior performance, increased fuel economy and state-of-the-art electronic capabilities. Western Star displayed its range of 2004 engines here at the Mid-America Trucking Show.

“Our lineup of engines provide customers with excellent options for their most rugged applications,” said John Merrifield, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Western Star Trucks. “Our customers have come to expect a wide variety of options to meet their needs, and I am confident that these engines will continue to provide excellent performance.

Mercedes-Benz

Western Star Trucks now offers the Mercedes-Benz MBE4000 engine on 4900 FA and 4900 SA models to meet the tough demands of the North American market. Featuring excellent performance, fuel economy, technology, durability, and low operating cost, this lightweight and powerful engine is designed to improve truck performance and increase driver satisfaction.

Features include electronically controlled high-pressure injector pumps, air-to-air charge cooling with a matched turbocharger, and data logging to monitor fuel consumption help to increase fuel economy. By using an Exhaust Gas Recirculation system (EGR), the engines meet 2004 EPA emission regulations without requiring aftertreatment devices. With a leading power-to-weight ratio, the engines also allow for increased payload and a lower operating cost.

In addition, the MBE4000 offers a state-of-the-art electronic control system that allows it to be customized to a specific application for maximum efficiency. The technology optimizes fuel injection, diagnoses problems on the fly, monitors oil pressure and coolant levels, and protects the engine from damage with an automatic shutdown. The electronic system also assists in fleet management by offering data collection and sharing, and reports on performance and fuel economy.

One of the strongest and lightest engines in its class, the MBE4000 comes standard with an exhaust brake and produces additional horsepower when combined with the optional Turbo Brake. Both the standard exhaust brake and optional Turbo Brake are quieter than typical engine brakes and can often be used where others are prohibited.

The lightweight 12.8-liter engine uses advanced materials and components for an excellent power-to-weight ratio, which allows for a greater payload and increased efficiency. Six-unit injection pumps are driven from the camshaft for an accurate injection control, four valves per cylinder allow the engine to breathe better, and a single cylinder air compressor uses less horsepower. In addition, the MBE4000 comes with a full two year, unlimited mileage warranty for truck applications.

Detroit Diesel

Standard on Western Star 4900 FA, 4900 SA, 4900 EX and 6900 XD models, the 2004 Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine offers customers an excellent combination of a popular and proven product that is fully certified to the new emissions standards.

Western Star offers customers one of the industry’s only traditional, premium trucks with Detroit Diesel power. The Series 60 meets the latest emissions regulations using EGR, and the 2004 engine does not require an aftertreatment device or any changes in usual maintenance procedures. The Series 60 offers several performance features including an EGR cooler with a lightweight tube-in-shell design for improved efficiency, and a new Electronic Fuel Injector for a faster response time and increased durability. A variable geometry turbocharger provides better fuel economy while improving drivability and engine braking.

In addition, the 12.7- and 14.0-liter Series 60 engines feature a new DDEC V electronic control for increased capability and reliability, which provides additional microprocessor power, four-times more memory, and 150 output pins versus the current 81. The 2004 Series 60 also includes a one-piece (Monotherm) piston with a closed oil gallery that reduces friction and allows for a higher compression ratio.

Caterpillar

Western Star Trucks offers a complete line of 2004 Cat® engines with ACERT® Technology including the C11, C13, and C15. The engines utilize Caterpillar’s ACERT Technology to meet the 2004 EPA standards while also retaining outstanding reliability, durability, and maintenance requirements. ACERT Technology employs a combination of advanced combustion technology, air-handling systems, engine electronics, and fuel injection.

Providing a wide range of power, Cat engines are designed to meet any on-highway vehicle application. Available on the 4900 FA and 4900 SA models, the lightweight C11 engine is available with ratings from 305 to 370 HP and 1050 to 1350 lb.-ft. of torque, and the C13 engine is available with 335 to 430 HP and 1350 to 1750 lb.-ft. of torque. In addition, the C15 engine offers 435 to 550 HP with 1550 to 1850 lb.-ft. of torque on the 4900 FA and 4900 SA, 4900 EX and 6900 XD.
