ParkSmart HVAC System Now Available for Freightliner Cascadia
Innovative design provides both cooling and heating; eliminates need for auxiliary APU
PORTLAND, Ore. – March 19, 2009 – Freightliner Trucks today announced that the ParkSmart™ HVAC System is available as a factory-installed option for the Cascadia™. Fully integrated into the vehicle’s sleeper, ParkSmart is a single system solution that replaces traditional auxiliary power units (APUs) for heating and cooling applications.
When the Cascadia is being driven during normal operation, the ParkSmart system uses electrical current from the alternator to run the air conditioner and coolant from the engine to run the heater. This is the same type of operation used with conventional sleeper auxiliary HVAC systems.
When the Cascadia is parked and the truck engine is off, the cooling system uses an electrically-driven air conditioning compressor that runs on four additional batteries located between the rails behind the sleeper. This will maintain driver comfort in any climate for 8-10 hours. The system significantly outperforms existing thermal and electrical storage systems offered in the aftermarket.
The heating function is accomplished by a diesel-fired coolant heater that circulates coolant through the auxiliary heater core and engine, providing the added benefit of a block heater. The auxiliary batteries are recharged by the alternator during normal running conditions.
“Driver comfort is very important to all of our customers, so we seek solutions that will enhance the cab environment,” said Melissa Clausen, director of product marketing for Freightliner Trucks. “ParkSmart’s low-maintenance and long-lasting cooling and heating capabilities make it an economical option that allows drivers to focus on what’s really important: the road and rest.”
Other comfort features of ParkSmart include its quiet operation – ideal for a good night’s rest – and seamless design. The system fits in the same location as traditional auxiliary sleeper HVAC systems, without reducing important under-bunk and cabinet storage space.
ParkSmart is CARB-approved and meets all anti-idling regulations and is qualified for federal excise tax exemption. For more information, call or visit your nearby Freightliner Trucks dealership or go to www.FreightlinerTrucks.com.
