SelecTrucks of Tampa Rolls Out Support for World’s Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics
Tampa, FL - SelecTrucks of Tampa employees recently joined hundreds of compassionate truck drivers in making the 2005 World’s Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics a great success. They found the experience to be a unique and enjoyable way to connect with fellow transport professionals while supporting a meaningful cause.
The World’s Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics is an annual celebration of the trucking industry that raises funds and awareness to benefit Special Olympics athletes. The Florida portion of the 2005 Truck Convoy, staged near Lakeland, occurred on October 15th. It included nearly 400 trucks, making Florida’s Truck Convoy the largest of 30 participating states and two Canadian provinces, setting a new world record.
Maury Schwegman, SelecTrucks of Tampa Center Manager, noted, “SelecTrucks of Tampa is proud to participate in such a worthy cause. It gives us an opportunity to interact with our community in a very positive way. One hundred percent of entry fees benefit Special Olympics. “
Fleet Salesman, Jim Stroup, and Center Salesman, Jose Garcia, took leadership roles in organizing SelecTrucks of Tampa’s participation. Stroup reached out to other members of the Florida Trucking Association to generate interest in The Truck Convoy. On the day of the event, Stroup drove a 2002 Freightliner Columbia L120. Garcia- in his third year of participation- drove a 2003 Freightliner FLD132 Classic XL with 70” Raised Roof Sleeper-Cab, which pulled the SelecTrucks of Tampa trailer. The Center team enjoyed showing their Freightliner trucks to other Truck Convoy participants and gave SelecTrucks t-shirts to individuals who expressed particular interest.
T-shirts were also given to Special Olympics athletes who engaged in activities to support Truck Convoy participants. Athletes cooked hamburgers and hotdogs at the picnic and cheered on the drivers. Jim Stroup described these interactions as moving and uplifting, “The expression of joy on the faces of the Special Olympics athletes spoke volumes about the appreciation they felt, “ he said.
The World’s Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics was created by Norm Schneiderhan, a Corporal with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, as a project of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
