Sterling Debuts the Acterra SportChassis CE

Sterling Truck Corporation has unveiled the Acterra SportChassis CE, a medium-duty recreational tow vehicle. Built on an Acterra chassis, the SportChassis CE features a 67-inch extended fiberglass cab which is custom-outfitted by Freightliner Specialty Vehicles, Inc. The new vehicle is designed to tow RV, horse, boat, race car or custom trailers. It is available through Sterling's network of Acterra dealers in the United States and Canada.

"The Acterra SportChassis CE is a stylish and tough vehicle with just about all the amenities that an RV owner or other recreational operator could ever want," said John Merrifield, Sterling Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "We have engineered this vehicle with heavy-duty components to meet the needs of customers with demanding tow-hitch requirements."

With a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 40,000 pounds, a towing capacity of 28,000 pounds and a 195-inch wheelbase, the SportChassis CE can handle trailers up to 53 feet in length, with weight-bearing capacity to spare for all the gear that RV enthusiasts, horse fanciers and automotive racers require. The CE exceeds most pickup capacities by nearly 10,000 pounds. According to Merrifield, the Acterra SportChassis combines great looks with luxurious comfort and leading performance.

On the outside, Acterra's stylish looks are enhanced by a standard chrome grille and standard wrap-around LED marker lights. High-volume dual air horns can be installed up top, while lighted bumper guides can be mounted on the front bumper. Custom graphics packages also are available, including factory paint to match the trailer.

The inside of the SportChassis is distinguished by its spaciousness and premium content. The 67-inch cabextension is taller and wider than the SportChassis cab itself and gives owners an on-the-road "living room" that doubles as a sleeper, with a 62-inch wide sofa that converts into a bed. The interior features walnut cabinetry, carpeted floors and large windows on each side for maximum visibility. The SportChassis CE's pair of seats in the cab can be upholstered in fabric or with Ultra Leatherâ„¢ as an option. A refrigerator, microwave oven and a portable toilet also are available.

Owners of the Acterra SportChassis CE may select from a host of high-style and high-tech options to boost the vehicle's levels of luxury, including an interactive video system with a color monitor. The video system can be used to watch television, DVDs and videotapes. It also integrates with the vehicle's optional personal computer and can display global positioning system (GPS) information. Flat-screen plasma TVs are another option.

When ordered with the optional AudioVox camera system, the video system lets the driver visually check conditions behind the cab or inside the trailer with a glance at the monitor.

Alpine sound systems up to 1,000 watts with as many as seven speakers also are available. The sound packages feature an AM/FM radio and CD changer, both run by wireless remote control. A CB radio can be built into the overhead wood cabinet in front of the driver.

Superior Ride Quality

The SportChassis CE features a standard ride enhancement package that promotes ride quality, vehicle stability and handling when towing a trailer or running bobtail. For increased stability, ballast weights are located strategically behind the rear axle and below the frame rails. A set of tuned shock absorbers cushions the ride on rough roads, while a steering stabilizer bar helps provide more roll stability. For improved traction in snow and ice, automatically-deploying snow chains are available. At the touch of a button, the chains are deployed in front of the drive tires.

The SportChassis CE measures a full 60 inches from the back of the cab extension to the center of the rear axle, which provides ample swing clearance for large travel trailers up to 102 inches wide."This generous clearance means the owner can pull a wide trailer without the risk of binding up when making tight turns," Merrifield said.

A number of hitch options are available, including a standard tongue-pull receiver hitch for boat trailers. Specifying the optional fixed 5th wheel hitch increases the towing capacity to 20,000 pounds. An air-operated 5th wheel increases the towing capacity to 28,000 pounds -- more than necessary for pulling the largest RV trailers. There's also a 2 5/16-inch optional ball hitch for hauling horse trailers. The vehicle's standard rear suspension is rated at 11,900 pounds - more than enough to handle the tongue weight of any RV trailer.

Standard Equipment

Caterpillar's CFE 3126 diesel engine (300 hp) is the standard power for the SportChassis CE. Owners also may select from a range of higher-horsepower diesel engines built by Mercedes-Benz and Cummins. Eaton's 6-speed FSO 8406 AutoShift transmission is standard. The automated transmission takes care of gear changes once the truck is in motion. There's also a choice of three automatic transmissions from Allison, including the MD3060 World Transmission. Twin 75-gallon fuel tanks, low-profile 22.5-inch Alcoa aluminum wheels and Michelin radial tires are standard.
