Truck Manufacturer Reaches Significant Milestone at St. Thomas, Ontario Plant
ST. THOMAS, ONTARIO …Sterling Truck Corporation celebrated the production of 100,000 Sterling trucks at its St. Thomas, Ontario, Truck Manufacturing Plant. The plant, which produces Sterling’s conventional vehicles for distribution in North America and export markets, marked the production milestone with a special ceremony attended by plant employees, customers, dealers and local officials.
“Sterling Trucks is very proud to celebrate this important milestone and our success at the St. Thomas plant,” said John Merrifield, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Sterling Truck Corporation. “We are extremely proud of these accomplishments and plan to continue to grow the company and the brand.”
To help commemorate the event, Sterling unveiled a banner to highlight the achievement and showcased each of the vehicles produced at the plant -- the A-Line, L-Line and Acterra models – during a special presentation that included plant employees, Sterling dealers, Sterling customer USF Holland and the Mayor of St. Thomas, Jeff Kohler.
Originally constructed in 1991 to build Freightliner-brand trucks, the plant has grown and changed substantially over the past 12 years. The original structure was 259,000 square feet and operated on one shift. In 1997, Freightliner LLC acquired the Ford Heavy Truck division and expanded the building to 416,000 square feet. The following year, Freightliner founded Sterling Truck Corporation as a subsidiary with its own distribution network and distinctive product offerings. Sterling produced its first truck in February 1998.
“As soon as we started building trucks, we never looked back,” added Merrifield. “Our plant is now 440,000 square feet and 1,200 employees strong. We have accomplished so much already, yet we remain focused on the future.”
