The Freightliner Group to Sponsor Free Concerts in Portland Parks
Mayor Tom Potter Lauds Company’s Civic Leadership
The Freightliner Group today announced the company will sponsor Portland Parks and Recreation’s series of free summer concerts in city parks. The $175,000 gift is the most significant corporate contribution in the 100-year history of the city’s free concerts.
“North America’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer must also be a leader in other ways,” said The Freightliner Group CEO Chris Patterson. “We believe in doing right by our employees, our communities and the environment and we think these concerts are a great way to demonstrate that belief. Free, family-friendly, high-quality entertainment helps keep parks places for families and improves livability for everyone in Portland.”
More than 50,000 people are expected to attend the 57 concerts to be held in 13 parks throughout the city, up from last year’s 42 concerts. The music at each event varies and includes symphony, salsa, ‘50s favorites and reggae.
“We are thrilled with this level of commitment to our city,” said Portland Mayor Tom Potter. “Freightliner is taking a real leadership role with this major contribution.”
The announcement came during a free concert in Shemanski Square with Patterson, Potter, Parks director Zari Santner and other city officials in attendance.
“It’s wonderful to have a local corporation recognize the importance of parks to the success of the city,” Santner said. Portland has 10,051 acres of parks, and nearly 41 percent of the budget comes from non-tax sources.
The Freightliner Group’s history in Portland dates to the 1930s, when trucker Leland James, president of Consolidated Freightways, began building vehicles that better fit his company’s needs. The lightweight, highly durable trucks became known as Freightliners and Freightliner was officially incorporated in 1942.
Today, The Freightliner Group is one of Portland's largest employers, with 4,400 total staff at its Global headquarters and a manufacturing plant on Swan Island. The company employs more than 25,000 people in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
