Steve Aul’s two blue 2004 Western Star 4900 SA logging trucks are his first Western Stars, and they won’t be his last.
“My dealer put together a perfect logging truck spec package,” he said. “Compared to other trucks I’ve driven, my Western Star trucks have proven to be a quality vehicle for my application.”
Aul’s trucking career began after leaving the Army at the age of 21, when he landed a job driving for a small logging company. After five years of experience in the industry, he started his own logging transport business in July 1990 with one truck. Now, Aul and his driver, Don, take their two Western Stars all over the state of Pennsylvania, picking up cargo from loggers and delivering it to sawmills, paper mills, and veneer yards.
While Aul’s powerful Caterpillar C15 engine with 475 horsepower helps him travel through rough terrain and haul heavy logs, and his high-quality seat keeps him comfortable, he especially appreciates the wide range of options available that make his job easier. For him, the most essential feature on his Western Stars is one that protects his premium interior. “The rubber floor mats are really important,” he said. “I can track a whole lot of mud into that truck, and those mats help protect my nice interior.”
Aul also knows the value of his trucks’ premium appearance. One was featured in Western Star Trucks’ 2004 calendar, while the other was the only logging truck to compete in the 2004 Stars & Stripes Paul K. Young Memorial Truck Beauty Championships held at the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS). While Aul enjoyed showing his truck, he doesn’t plan on showing it again.
“With all the dirt I run through on a daily basis, it’s tough to keep my truck clean enough for competition!” he said.
