NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – July 22, 2015 – Western Star Truck Sales, Inc., has partnered with PALFINGER to develop a new self-loader log truck that is amung the most productive and efficient in the North American market.
The PALFINGER-built EPSILON A-Line M13A80 loader is mounted at the rear of a Western Star 4900SF. A claw at the end of a boom picks up 16-foot logs and deposits them in the bed of the truck. The combined unit can be controlled by a single operator and used in spaces too tight for a separate loader.
The crane is lighter and stronger than previous models, which allows the truck to carry more logs, achieve better mileage and comply with road weight restrictions, said Tom Zwickle, national sales manager at PALFINGER, the global leading manufacturer for hydraulic lifting, loading and handling solutions.
The 4900SF is equipped with a 600-hp Detroit™ DD16® engine and 18-speed manual transmission. The combination gives the truck the power and handling to negotiate logging roads while hauling a full load. Features such as galvannealed steel cabs for strength and safety, high ground clearance to handle ruts and roomy interiors to keep operators comfortable even during the longest days.
The Western Star 4900 is one of the most powerful and versatile trucks on the market. Multiple options make it easy to spec the truck for a variety of uses, from construction to towing to mining to logging.
“We knew we wanted to use Western Star because the trucks have proven themselves over and over,” said Zwickle. “Western Star dominates the logging industry and we wanted to partner with the best.”
“This new truck/crane combination offers our customers another way to make their businesses more profitable and efficient,” said Peter Schimunek, marketing segment manager for Western Star. “PALFINGER is a great partner because they are as committed as we are to bringing the best possible products to our customers in the logging industry.”
The truck will be on display at the following industry shows in 2015: Great Lakes Logging & Heavy Equipment Expo, Sept. 10-12, Escanaba, Mich.; International Construction & Utility Equipment Expo, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, Louisville, Ky.; Tree Care Industry Expo, Nov. 12-14, Pittsburgh, Pa.
