LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. Western Star Trucks today unveiled a new dimension in comfort and style for over-the-road truck operators: the Stratosphere Star Light Sleeper. The 82-inch Stratosphere sleeper offers full stand-up room and a flat floor throughout the cab and sleeper. On the outside, the Stratosphere's external configuration allows for the installation of roof-mounted air horns and marker lights. This combination of internal comfort and external styling features is unique in the truck manufacturing industry and offered only by Western Star.
The Stratosphere sleeper is available on all Western Star 4900 models, including the EX, FA and SA. It is available for order immediately.
"The Stratosphere Star Light Sleeper delivers the ideal combination of modern engineering and traditional styling for truckers who want only the best," said John Merrifield, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Western Star Trucks. "In this new sleeper, the owner-operator will enjoy one of the most open and spacious living compartments available without giving up traditional styling."
According to Merrifield, the Stratosphere provides a significant amount of additional headroom in the area between the driver's and passenger's seat. This allows the driver or passenger to stand up and walk through to the sleeper compartment -- without crouching or bending over. Since the floor is flat between the cab and the sleeper, the driver or passenger does not have to worry about steps or ledges as is the case with other sleepers on the market today.
"With its ergonomic design and overall spaciousness, the Stratosphere sleeper will make everyday activities more enjoyable," Merrifield said. "At the same time it still looks and feels like the traditional Western Star truck that our customers know and love."
The Stratosphere sleeper is available in three trim levels - Phoenix, Mesa and Dakota - with numerous cabinet, storage, window and lighting options. Four different bunk configurations are available, including the optional dinette sleeper seating package which provides two seats and a table, turning the sleeper compartment into a comfortable area for eating, reading or doing paperwork. In addition, a new optional skylight window adds to the sleeper's airy feel.
Standard sleeper features include:

"The Stratosphere offers a broad range of features and options so our customers can customize the cab and sleeper to their exact preferences," Merrifield said. "This sleeper will be our customer's home and office on the road, so we want them to be able to set it up just as they like it."
A further benefit of the Stratosphere Star Light Sleeper, according to Merrifield, is the fact that it can be converted into a Day Cab after being used as a sleeper, which increases the resale value of the vehicle in the truck market.
"With its incredible spaciousness, comfort, style and high feature content, we believe the Stratosphere Star Light Sleeper will have broad appeal among owner-operator truckers," Merrifield said. "The Stratosphere is a unique product and we expect it to generate a lot of excitement in the industry and among our customers."
The addition of the Stratosphere signals another significant investment into new products by Western Star. Last year, the company launched the "LowMax" version of the 4900 EX heavy-duty truck. The 4900 EX LowMax features a lowered cab and sleeper height and is loaded with styling features for maximum driver appeal.
