68-Inch Walk-Through, Flat-Floor Sleeper Offers New Option for Comfort and Functionality

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY…Western Star Trucks today introduced the 68-inch Stratosphere Star Light Sleeper to the U.S. market to complement the popular 82-inch version. This new configuration is ideal for regional hauling applications. Operators will appreciate the interior stand-up room and a flat floor throughout the cab and sleeper in this latest addition to Western Star’s line of walk-through sleepers.

“Originally created for the Canadian market to help meet overall length laws, we are excited to introduce the spacious 68-inch Stratosphere Star Light Sleeper to our U.S. customers seeking a shorter-length sleeper than the 82-inch version,” said John Merrifield, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing for Western Star Trucks. "The 68-inch Stratosphere sleeper is the perfect complement to the 82-inch Stratosphere sleeper, offering all of the same creature comforts and styling in a more maneuverable configuration.”

The 68-inch Stratosphere sleeper is available on all Western Star 4900 models in the U.S. and Canada, including the EX (132” BBC set forward front axle), 4900 FA (set forward front axle in both 109” and 123” BBCs) and 4900 SA (set back front axle in both 109” and 123” BBCs).

The Stratosphere Sleeper’s level of internal comfort and external styling is unique to Western Star. It is an ideal combination of modern engineering and traditional styling. Providing more than two feet of additional headroom in the area between the driver and passenger seat, the Stratosphere allows the driver or passenger to stand up and walk through to the sleeper compartment – without crouching or bending over. With a flat floor between the cab and the sleeper, the driver and passenger also do not have to worry about steps or ledges. In addition, the vehicle can easily be converted into a day cab, increasing the resale value of the vehicle.

“This new sleeper offers drivers an open and spacious living compartment they can appreciate, while providing them with the traditional styling they have come to expect from Western Star,” Merrifield said. "We are excited to offer our customers the ergonomic design and overall spaciousness of the Stratosphere paired with the maneuverability of a regional haul vehicle.”

The Stratosphere sleeper is available in two trim levels – Phoenix and Mesa – all with numerous cabinet, storage, window and lighting options. Three different bunk configurations are available, including the optional dinette sleeper seating package, which provides two seats and a table, turning the sleeper compartment into a comfortable area for eating, reading or doing paperwork. An optional skylight window also adds to the sleeper's airy feel.

Standard sleeper features include:

Optional storage configurations include:

To make life on the road that much more comfortable, the Stratosphere offers a wide range of comfort options:

“The Stratosphere Sleeper line offers our customers many of the features and options they need to make their home-away-from-home more comfortable,” added Merrifield. “Western Star’s highly customized 68- and 82-inch Stratosphere sleepers will satisfy truck operators on both short and long trips.”
